NSERC Prizes 2023
On November 1, NSERC’s highest honours, the NSERC Prizes, were awarded to twenty-two of Canada’s world-leading scientists and engineers and six of their industry partners received awards for their exceptional work and contributions to research and training in a range of fields. Yoshua Bengio was awarded Canada’s most prestigious science prize, the Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal for Science and Engineering, worth up to $1 million.

NSERC announces improvements to Alliance grants program
NSERC is pleased to announce the launch of several improvements to its Alliance grants program, in response to feedback and building on experience with the program over the last four years.
NSERC and the French National Research Agency (ANR) launch a new partnership to support collaborative research projects in quantum computing hardware and software
We are pleased to announce the first joint collaborative research opportunity to support academic researchers from Canada and France in their pursuit of research in quantum computing hardware and software. Applications will be accepted from November 23, 2023 until 8:00 p.m. (ET) on March 28, 2024.
NSERC-German Research Foundation (DFG) collaboration supports 16 innovative projects on Sustainable Processes and Chemistry
Canada and Germany have a strong history of cooperation and, together, recognize the importance of international collaboration in promoting scientific discoveries. To this end, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) are pleased to announce their joint support of 16 collaborative research projects focussed on sustainable processes and chemistry.
The College and Community Social Innovation Fund competition is now open
These grants are intended to foster community innovation by connecting the talent, facilities and capabilities of Canada’s colleges and polytechnics with the research needs of community organizations.
Canadian colleges address local challenges through 59 research collaboration projects
These projects, funded through the tri-agency College and Community Innovation program, will enable colleges to increase their capacity to develop partnerships that foster innovation of importance to their communities, and increase the potential of their efforts to have broader impact across Canada.
Applied Research Tools and Instruments grants 2023 competition now open
Applied Research Tools and Instruments (ARTI) grants support the purchase of applied research equipment to foster and enhance the capacity of colleges to undertake applied research projects in partnership with industry, public, not-for-profit and health organizations within their community and to provide training opportunities for students. Applications must be submitted by January 16, 2024.
Ad hoc panel to inform guidance on the use of generative artificial intelligence in the development and review of research proposals
NSERC, CIHR, SSHRC and the Canada Foundation for Innovation announced the establishment of an ad hoc panel of external experts that will inform guidance to the agencies and the research community on the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in the development and review of research proposals. The panel, appointed by the agency presidents, comprises a group of individuals with experience and expertise in AI, ethics, research administration and related fields.
Open Access Policy: Summary of survey results released
On July 4, 2023, the Tri-Agencies announced the review of the Tri-Agency Open Access (OA) Policy, with the goal of requiring immediate OA. An online survey was launched alongside the announcement to help inform updates to the Policy. The agencies received over 1,400 responses between July 4 and September 15, 2023. The survey results indicate broad support for open access but also concerns around costs for Article Processing Charges and the ease of OA publishing.
NSERC’s Accessibility Plan
NSERC is committed to achieving universal accessibility for its research community and staff. To that end, NSERC launched its inaugural Accessibility Plan almost a year ago. The Agency is about to publish its first progress report highlighting key achievements and summarizing feedback received on the Plan.

NSERC announces Sabrina Rondeau as the winner of the NSERC and L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science supplement
Sabrina Rondeau is a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Biology at the University of Ottawa, working in Jessica Forrest’s lab. Dr. Rondeau’s research focus lies at the interface between pollinator conservation and sustainable food production.
The research image contest Science Exposed is back!
Eye-catching images coming from research projects from all fields can now be submitted until January 30, 2024. This is a wonderful opportunity for the research community to showcase to a large audience the great work that is done in Canada.
