The NSERC Accessibility Plan outlines ways to make the agency and its programs and services more accessible, for both the Canadian research community and agency employees.

Government of Canada invests $1.4 billion in strategic research at postsecondary institutions

An investment of $1.4 billion in support of 11 large-scale research initiatives in strategic areas, through the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF), will allow researchers to capitalize on the strengths of their respective research areas, and attract capital and world-class talent.


$200 million in support of Canadian-led interdisciplinary, international, high-risk and high-reward research

195 projects receive support through three different New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF) competitions.


$9.4 million awarded to support research on small modular reactors

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) are pleased to announce funding of $9.4 million over three years to support 29 research projects through the NSERC-CNSC Small Modular Reactors Research Grant Initiative.


NSERC launches two Alliance International Quantum funding opportunities

These grants will provide support for university researchers in Canada to establish and grow international research collaborations with researchers in the academic sector that will strengthen research excellence in Canada and abroad, and further develop Canadian research strengths and leadership in quantum science and technology.


NSERC is now accepting applications for Alliance Consortia Quantum grants

The next competition for the Alliance Consortia Quantum grants, in support of the National Quantum Strategy, is now accepting applications for projects that enable a coordinated approach to quantum research and innovation across Canada.


Ten Canadian postsecondary institutions received the first Dimensions recognitions for advancing equity, diversity and inclusion

The program was launched to help drive a deeper cultural change within the postsecondary research ecosystem by identifying and eliminating obstacles and inequities. The ten recipients were part of a cohort of 17 institutions co-developing the Canadian recognition program as part of a five-year pilot.


NSERC and the French National Research Agency form partnership

New collaboration will create a framework to support new and existing collaboration between both countries and launch joint calls for proposals, in support of a new joint committee announced by the governments of Canada and France.


Update to NSERC Prizes nomination deadlines

NSERC’s suite of prizes will have new nomination deadlines for the next competition. The call for nominations will be launched this August in parallel with the updated program descriptions on NSERC’s website. Visit NSERC’s website to view the new deadlines for each prize.


The Tri-agency celebrates the publication of institutional research data management strategies

Postsecondary institutions and research hospitals eligible to administer funds from CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC achieved a milestone in March 2023 with the publication of their institutional research data management (RDM) strategies. Congratulations to these institutions! RDM plays a key role in ensuring the integrity and accessibility of Canadian research.


NSERC welcomes Dr. Mark Green, from Queen’s University, as its new Scholar in Residence

NSERC is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Mark Green, to occupy the advisory position of Scholar in Residence from 2023 to 2025. In his role as Scholar in Residence, Dr. Green will provide NSERC with unique and novel viewpoints from an Indigenous researcher perspective on NSERC’s programs, policies, and processes.
