True to its commitment to research excellence in the natural sciences and engineering, NSERC has launched a hub highlighting its actions, programs and policies related to EDI as a tool for the research community, policymakers and other stakeholders to work with us on strengthening the research ecosystem.

The Government of Canada to support global centres for research on climate change and clean energy

The Government of Canada, through NSERC and SSHRC, joins efforts with international partners to take part in the Global Centres initiative, led by the US National Science Foundation, for use-inspired research addressing global challenges in climate change and clean energy.


Government of Canada establishes new research hubs to accelerate Canada’s vaccine and therapeutics production

This investment, made through the integrated Canada Biomedical Research Fund and Biosciences Research Infrastructure Fund competition, will bolster research and talent development efforts led by the institutions, working in collaboration with their partners.


NSERC announces first grant recipients in support of Canada’s National Quantum Strategy

The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, announced an investment of close to $51 million to 75 recipients awarded through NSERC’s Alliance grants and Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) grants.


NSERC announces cooperation with the Swiss National Science Foundation

Complementary NSERC and SNSF funding opportunities will allow Canadian and Swiss researchers to access support for joint research projects.


Update to the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Human – TCPS 2

The official human research ethics policy of the three federal research funding agencies has been updated. The Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans – TCPS 2 (2022) reflects priorities identified by the Panel on Research Ethics, the tri-agencies, and feedback received from the research community during public consultations in 2021.


NSERC and Natural Resources Canada partner to fund research on small modular reactors

Through these grants, NRCan will provide support up to $100,000 per year, for up to four years. NSERC’s contribution will be calculated using the Alliance program’s cost-sharing formula.


New partnership to fund research collaborations focused on sustainable agriculture

NSERC and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, in collaboration with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, are pleased to announce a new partnership to develop the solutions required for a sustainable, resilient, and profitable agriculture and agri-food sector in the uncertain climate and net zero economy of the future.

As of December 6, 2021, NSERC has consolidated its telephone numbers under its toll-free telephone number (1-855-275-2861), which serves as the new single point of entry for contacting all NSERC's programs. Please update your contact information as other dedicated program numbers are no longer in use.

New training initiatives to prepare students and postdoctoral fellows for their future careers

NSERC announced more than $32 million in funding for 20 new training initiatives for the next generation of scientists and engineers through its Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) program.


Supplements available for NSERC-funded students

NSERC has partnered with other organizations to offer supplements to NSERC-funded undergraduate, postgraduate and postdoctoral students. The supplements include topics of relevance to the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC), Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) – Canadian Forest Service.


Automatic extension period for the authority to use grant funds now applies to College and Community Innovation grants

As of April 1, 2023, College and Community Innovation (CCI) grants are part of the funding opportunities that receive an automatic one-year extension, as per the tri-agency guide on financial administration, Extension period for the authority to use grant funds. This change applies to new and current CCI grants.
