Government of Canada celebrates natural sciences and engineering research excellence

Twenty-six of Canada’s world-leading scientists and engineers, and 28 of their industry partners, received NSERC prizes recognizing their exceptional work and contributions to research and training in a range of research fields. Their achievements include advancements in climate change science and plant response, major discoveries in the field of Artificial Intelligence for mobile robots, pioneering contributions in scalable quantum technology, and groundbreaking partnership work on energy storage solutions.

NSERC and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission launch a new initiative supporting small modular reactors research

NSERC and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission are pleased to announce a new initiative to support university research on small modular reactors. This joint initiative will enhance research and knowledge, supporting the deployment of SMRs in a safe and secure manner and strengthening the science needed for regulatory decisions.


Government of Canada invests in applied research collaborations between colleges and local partners

The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry announced more than $85 million for 76 grants through the College and Community Innovation program, managed by NSERC, CIHR and SSHRC. These collaborations encourage colleges to help partners address research challenges that are of importance to their communities and are also applicable across Canada.


Alliance Option 2 updates: funding limit increase and removal of application limits

As of November 10, 2022, the funding limit request for Alliance Option 2 projects will increase to $1,000,000 per year. Additionally, there will no longer be a limit on the number of applications that researchers can submit.


NSERC National Quantum Strategy funding opportunities

We are pleased to remind you of our suite of funding opportunities in support of the National Quantum Strategy that are available and receiving applications. We encourage eligible Canadian researchers to apply to the Alliance International Quantum Grants by January 31, 2023, and to the Alliance Quantum Grants throughout fiscal year 2022-23.


The College and Community Social Innovation Fund competition is now open

These grants are intended to foster community innovation by connecting the talent, facilities and capabilities of Canada’s colleges and polytechnics with the research needs of community organizations.


The College and Community Innovation program's Mobilize grants competition is now open

The Mobilize grants provide Canadian colleges with flexible funding to acquire necessary resources to address applied research priorities in industry, health, and not-for-profit community-based organizations.


Dimensions program’s key concepts revealed to help promote equity, diversity and inclusion in the research ecosystem

NSERC is releasing key concepts of the Dimensions recognition program that make it unique: the Inclusive assessment framework and the recognition stages. These are important sections of a handbook that was created to guide interested institutions in applying for a Dimensions recognition.


New appointment in the Research Partnerships directorate

NSERC is delighted to announce the appointment of Manal Bahubeshi as Vice-President, Research Partnerships. Since joining NSERC in the Fall of 2020, Manal has guided the expansion of many strategic partnerships and played an important role in implementing the National Security Guidelines for Research Partnerships, and NSERC’s support of the National Quantum Strategy.

Microsoft Power Platform has been selected as the platform to support the Tri-agency grants management solution (TGMS), and a Request for proposals has been launched to select a vendor to help with the configuration of the solution.

As of December 6, 2021, NSERC has consolidated its telephone numbers under its toll-free telephone number (1-855-275-2861), which serves as the new single point of entry for contacting all NSERC's programs. Please update your contact information as other dedicated program numbers are no longer in use.

The Government of Canada invests in the next generation of researchers across the country for a stronger and more equitable future

The Government of Canada announced that NSERC, CIHR, and SSHRC, are investing $275 million in the latest cohort of nearly 6,000 scholarships and fellowships for research training.


The Government of Canada announces new funding to support Black scholars

The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, announced new funding to support Canada’s Black students and postdoctoral researchers, which will strengthen equity, diversity and inclusion in Canadian academia and in Canada’s skilled workforce. This funding will include $40.9 million over five years and $9.7 million ongoing to increase the number of awards available to highly qualified Black scholars.


Supplements available for NSERC-funded students

NSERC has partnered with other organizations to offer supplements to NSERC-funded undergraduate, postgraduate and postdoctoral students. The supplements include topics of relevance to the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Canadian Space Agency and Natural Resources Canada – Canadian Forest Service. NSERC, in partnership with FRQNT, has launched a special edition of the Science, Action! video contest to celebrate the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development. Grab a camera, tell your story and show us your science! You’ve got one minute to win one of 6 cash prizes. Make sure to read the details on eligibility and mark your calendars for the submission period, which begins on January 16, 2023.


NSERC applauds Brittney Borowiec, winner of the NSERC and L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Supplement

NSERC and L'Oréal Canada, in collaboration with the Canadian Commission for UNESCO, offer one $10,000 supplement annually to a woman involved in a promising research project who has been awarded an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship (PDF), and who has demonstrated exemplary involvement in science promotion, mentorship, and leadership.


Science Exposed 2023 submission period open

Research images can now be submitted to Science Exposed 2023! The individuals or groups that most successfully combined creativity and science will be awarded one of many cash prizes. This is also a chance to showcase their work across the country. View this year’s winning images and finalists. The contest is organized by NSERC and Acfas.
